Reliability and Validity of Organizational Trust Scale in Nursing

Purpose: This methodological study aims to adapt the organizational trust scale to nursing and test its reliability and validity in order to add the scale to nursing literature.

Method: The universe of the research included nurses employed at hospitals in the European side of Istanbul. Nurses in 10 non-specialized hospitals with bed capacities of over 100 who had at least one year of experience in their current institutions were included in the sample. 5-item questionnaire and the Organizational Trust Scale (OTS) were used for data collection. Percentage, Content Validity Index, factor analysis, Cronbach alpha coefficient and item total score correlation were used for data analyses.

Results: Item total score correlation value of the OTS scale was 0.40-0.75 and factor load varied between 0.497 and 0.853. The scale was divided into 3 factor groups (trust in supervisor, trust in institution and trust in coworker) as in the original scale. An analysis of internal consistency of OTS revealed a Cronbach alpha value of 0. 96.

Conclusion: This study showed that OTS was a reliable and valid tool to be used for nurses.
