A Group of Final Year Students Views on Nursing Education

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine expectations and though of the nursing students in terms of improving nursing education, to evaluate their suggestions, to learn expectation of them from the teaching staffs and to identify their problems.

Method: The study was based on the simple descriptive research type with oriented sampling of 68 fi nal year students of the nursing department. A questionnaire was prepared by the authors from the related of literature review and was used for collecting of data. It was consists of four parts with 24 articles. The articles need to answer with four options. All data were collected on best time of each student with care. Before the survey, a brief explanation was given to the students about the aim of the work and demanded to answer all questions in the survey carefully without putting names on it. The questionnaire has been worked up by the authors, the validity analysis of the scales used, confi rmatory factor analysis (DFA) with the reliability analysis were investigated with the obtained average variance, the composite reliability and Cronbach’s alpha coeffi cients. A few open-ended questions about what kind of problems they had during their training and education periods were asked. All data were coded and transmitted to a computer. For the analysing of the collected data, the descriptive statistics was used. They were evaluated by using the SPSS and AMOS software package programmes.

Results: With the highest average (2.75, ss=0,582) expectations of the students were, the attending of congress, conference and seminars and to have a national standardisation on nursing education and training (2.73,ss=0,745). On the other hand, they were suggested that the bachelor science on the nursing education and training should be in the formal education (average of 2.79, ss=0,640). When their expectations from the teaching staffs were evaluated, they were stated that the teaching staffs should have defend their students when it is necessary (average of 2.83,ss=0,539), it was the highest expectations in the survey. The primary problems of the students’ along their education and training were inadequate clinic area with a percentage of 20% in the survey.

Conclusion: As a result of the fi ndings of this study, it was understood that the students in nursing education to improve their knowledge and skills they are willing to contribute academic activities. They were expected from the teaching staffs should participate actively. They believe that the formal nursing education and training system is more effective method. On the other hand the fi ndings were showed that students have various problems about education and the hospital environment.
