A Women Health Problem: Custom and Honor Killings

Basically formed by the law and the possession, the custom and the honor concepts are closely related to women health. Even the customs affect every people in the society; those are the women who suffer, who lost their health or their life. According to UN’s Population Fund over 5 thousand of women are killed for honor reasons. Especially in the regions where the feudal structure preserves its force, the extensively encountered custom and honor killings are the tragic result of the sexual discrimination, which has historical origins. The cultural structures, which create honor killings, are based of traditions serve for the continuation of the man dominant structure in the family. The honor concept, which is formed with the active role of the man and the passive role of the women, is shown as the reason of the violence against women and the honor killingsin the Turkey. It is impossible to talk about women health in a place where no basic human rights and freedom. Even if significant changes are realized with the changes realized in our regulations, to achieve the full social mindset transformation, the national, international and the non-governmental organizations have to work coordinately. The purpose of this review is really a women's health issues about the status of custom and honor killings unroll and the objectively about this issue is to gain awareness.
