An Analysis of The Attitude of Patients Towards Using Their Patient Rights at A University Hospital

Aim: This study has been performed descriptively in order to determine the attitudes of patients towards their own rights mentioned in the “Patients’ Rights Act” that is in effect.

Method: It has been realized in the internal medicine and surgical clinics of Ege University Medicine Faculty Hospital between the dates of March 1- May 31, 2010. The study sample consisted of 196 inpatients in this clinics. The data have been gathered through an individual information form and the Scale of Patient Rights Using Attitude. Analysis of data was done with percentage, test of Student t-test and ANOVA test.

Results: As a result of the study, it was determined that 55.1% of the patients had knowledge of patient rights and 56.5% of these patients learned about their rights from healthcare workers. It was determined that the patients’ mean score of the scale of patient rights using attitude was 64.52±22.69, and the variables such as age, place of residence, presence of a chronic illness, source of information for patient rights positive affected patients’ attitudes towards using their patient rights.

Conclusion: It can be said that the point of patients’ attitudes towards using their patient rights was low.
