Effectiveness of Fecal Incontinence Management Systems on Intensive Care Patients: Meaning for Nursing

Fecal incontinence is seen between 17-68% in the intensive care units. In literature, it was reported that this problem were caused to the fluid-electrolyte insufficient, increase need to hygiene, perineal dermatitis, pressure ulcers, infections, contamination of surgical wounds, increase of nursing workforce, prolong of hospital stay, increase the cost of patient care. Fecal incontinence management systems are commonly used in Europe and USA to decrease of negative effects of the fecal incontinence. These systems were begun to use in Turkey at last years. This article was written to investigate fecal incontinence management system’s effect and importance of these systems for nursing activities.
